Leaving the South Side for a better life |
||
My parents moved from the South Side when I was 6 yrs. old. We lived on 22nd street and the junk yard was across from our house. Rats actually got into our house sometimes.The man who owned the house asked my parents to buy it, and my parents wanted a better life for their kids. My parents decided to move up the hill to Mt. Oliver away from the river and to a better community. Eventually they bought a new home in Knoxville.
38 years have passed and today my parents' house in Knoxville sold for $19,000. The closing was a block from our house on 22nd street and it had a for sale sign out front. I called the agent and was told it is up for sale for $249,000. Next Sunday is an open house and I'm taking my mom. My dad has since passed away. If only my parents knew what the future held, they would have grabbed that house for the asking price of $10,000 in a minute. |
