Pittsburgh Neighborhood Tours Site Credits

Pittsburgh Neighborhood Tours is a collaborative project of seven neighborhood-based economic development organizations, as well as the VisitPittsburgh, Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Neighborhood Tours is financed by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

In November of 2004, the partners submitted a Heritage Tourism Cooperative Marketing grant request to the PA Tourism Office, and were awarded $60,000 to implement Pittsburgh Neighborhood Tours. A second grant of $15,000 was awarded in 2006. The partnership is the first statewide to apply such grant funds to marketing neighborhoods as tourist attractions.

Our organizations receive further financial support from Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh.

The content on this site was collected through community-level contacts and publicly accessible sources. We would also like to acknowledge the work of pioneers of the Pittsburgh neighborhood story who, though various documentary efforts, have researched and compiled excellent histories and portraits of our city’s character.

• Walter Kidney. Mr. Kidney was the architectural historian at Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. A scholar, writer, and preservation advocate, Mr. Kidney produced many titles throughout his career, including Pittsburgh Landmark Architecture: The Historic Buildings of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
  
• Abby Mendelson. Mr. Mendelson is a prolific Pittsburgh-based writer, and his subjects have often included the people and places that define Pittsburgh’s character, including Pittsburgh: A Place in Time.
  
  
• Rick Sebak. Mr. Sebak, a producer at WQED Multimedia, has become a local hero for the writing, narration, and production of the Pittsburgh History Series, a collection of documentaries about Pittsburgh neighborhoods, including North Side Story, The Strip Show, Something About Oakland, South Side, and It’s the Neighborhoods.
  
  
• Franklin Toker. Mr. Toker is a Professor of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. His book Pittsburgh: An Urban Portrait is a rich and thorough study of the architecture of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods.
  
  
• The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The Library’s “Bridging the Urban Landscape” website features text and historic photography, including profiles of many Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
